5 Ways to Thrive as a Renaissance Soul in your Career - When I Grow Up

5 Ways to Thrive as a Renaissance Soul in your Career - When I Grow Up I learned about the term Renaissance Soul thanks to a book I picked up years ago, when I was writing my research paper for my coaching school on how coaching creative types differs from coaching non-creative types. The sub-title of the book was Life Design for People with Too Many Passions to Pick Just One (its now How To Make Your Passions Your Life). If that resonates with you, then youre a Renaissance Soul, although  you can find a bigger checklist here. Now, if this IS you, which it probably is (its me AND about, oh, 100% of my clients), you might just make really negative connotations with this personality trait of yours. You can equate it to your flakiness, or ADD-ness, or that you often dont finish what you start. But really, being multi-passionate is positive! Were lifelong learners, we thrive on variety, were creative, we can juggle lots of virtual balls in the air, were natural entrepreneurs, and we always have something to share and teach to others. Now that we know being a Renaissance Soul aint a curse, how can we  build it in to create and achieve our grown-up, passionate careers? Here are 5 ideas: 1. Stop searching for the Or in your career, and instead embrace the And.  My career is a sneaky multi-passionate one, because as a creative career coach I do so much more than coach my clients: I write, I speak, I edit videos, I conduct interviews, I teach, Im a community leader, a copywriter, etc. I actually broke down the hats that I wear and found 15 titles I can claim. And the best part? I can decide tomorrow to write a book, or teach a course, or to delegate my project management responsibilities. 2. Experiment with what time management structure works best for  you. Ive had multi-passionate clients that only wanna work on one thing at a time, but need to know theyll be done with their project in 3 months so they could move on to the next thing. Ive also had clients that need 3 balls in the air at all times so they dont get too antsy. And ya know what? Both are right for that respective person!  While there are resources like this, this and this that are tailored to us creative Renaissance Souls to help us with our productivity, a general catch-all that works for  everyone  just doesnt exist. So start by consistently trying  something and then tweak it along the way! 3. Let it be known that you love being  a learner, and build variety into your work.  Instead of trying to hide your natural curiosity, allow yourself to become the person raising their hand to take a new training course or research a new project. If you work for someone else, let your boss or manager know that you  thrive when you can  work on a wider  scope of projects, learn something new, or have more variety in your day-to-day activities. If you work for yourself, you can use what you learned about yourself time-management-wise to block your time accordingly. For example, I compartmentalize my week by working with clients Mondays and Tuesdays, writing on Wednesdays, working on my projects (my upcoming CreativeLive class, my podcast, etc.) on Thursdays and doing admin and catch-up work on Fridays. It usually doesnt work as cleanly as that, but it helps me keep focused day-to-day while allowing me to flex my multi-passionate muscles. You, though, might do best with making a stand ing date on Friday afternoons to work through a new book or online course. Or maybe you want to spend the mornings painting and the afternoons filling orders and doing more admin-y, marketing-based work? The key here is to figure out how you work best, and then schedule it in advance so you can set yourself up to best follow through. 4. Lead  a passion project at work.  Think about what makes you feel meaningful. Is it supporting gay rights? Working with dogs? Arts education in our schools? Zero in on a cause, passion, or interest of yours and see what and how you can connect it with the work you do. René  at Beach Beauty Bar is a great example of this. She started a half-marathon training team  for free, with twice-weekly runs and tons of support. It makes so much sense because she describes her work as being about human connection and invoking positive, healing energy within each of her clients.  Renés a former client of mine, and I know that the training team is a great way to make her current (and potential future!) clients feels beautiful inside and out! If you dont work for yourself, it might be tough to put together, say, gay rights and the advertising agency you work for. But what if you ask to lead a team to do pro bono work for the Gay Mens Health Crisis? Or if you ask to have your agency sponsor a te am for the annual AIDS Walk? Youll never know  until you open your mouth and ask! 5. Get your hands on 25 digital products to rock your career (worth $1712!) for just $97 as part of the 3rd Annual Multi-Passionate Must-Haves sale.  Im so proud to be the co-creator of this bundle, and this one is extra special to me because its specifically career-focused. Self-Employed People Pay Less in Taxes

Self-Employed People Pay Less in Taxes Who pays a greater share of their income in taxes â€" Warren Buffett, or his administrative assistant? Obviously, posing the question implies its answer. Politicians may tout the virtues of our “progressive” tax system, but it doesn’t really favor the poor over the rich. Nor does it favor the rich over the poor, not when 40% of federal tax receipts come from 1% of the population. Fairly or otherwise, the tax system favors the diligent over the unprepared. Specifically, the system favors independent businesspeople over salaried workers. This topic requires a book-length explanation, but to summarize, starting your own business lets you enjoy tax advantages wage slaves only dream of. Take two people in the same field, making like incomes, living in the same city â€" the only exception being that one owns his own business and the other works for someone else. It’s eminently possible that the latter person’s tax bill is nine times the former’s. Read More: How Do I Choose the Best Rewards Credit Card? Declare your independence today, if your career lets you make a horizontal shift to entrepreneurship. If you’re an anesthesiologist, it’ll be hard to rent out an office and put up a sign that reads “Mepivacaine Administered Here â€" Happy Hour 4 â€" 7.” But if you’re an accountant, real estate agent, home inspector, engineer, attorney* or in any kind of creative profession, you can take advantage of complex tax laws. I’m not talking about the kind of entrepreneurship that requires you to open a physical storefront and spend years building a customer base. I’m talking about changes you can make now that will immediately impact your bottom line. I tried to go as long as I could without using the first-person pronoun, but my story illustrates the point. A decade ago I was working for a decently-sized advertising agency as a senior copywriter, making somewhat more than the nation’s per capita income. One day I ran the numbers and realized I could make more money going out on my own. Read More: How Do I Determine the Biggest Monthly Payment That I Can Afford? I collected most of my new clients, other ad agencies, via word-of-mouth. But most importantly, I took on the very agency I’d left as a client â€" and charged them about 30% more than they paid me as an employee. There are two components to that: 1) they were underpaying me to begin with, but had to cough up once I exercised my leverage and threatened to walk and B) the daily rate they paid me after the switch was just for the services I rendered nothing else. It included no employee benefits, no capital expenditures for a workstation, no space reserved for me at the office Christmas party, no food allowance, no 6.2% Federal Insurance Contributions Act tax, no unemployment insurance premium. The responsibility for all that now fell on me. Which is wonderful. It meant that instead of my former employer enjoying all the possible tax deductions from my labor, I got to take advantage of them. My taxes got a little more complicated â€" I now had to keep more detailed records, and file quarterly instead of annually â€" but the benefits grossly outweighed the costs. It’s easy to get started, but also easy to make mistakes. You don’t want to be a single proprietor. You want to found an S Corporation, a legal entity that protects you from creditors who are forbidden from coming after certain classifications of income. An S Corporation lets you separate your money between salary and capital gains, the latter of which is taxed at a lower rate. Read More: What Is the Best Way to Find My Credit Score? Find a company that specializes in entity formation. It’ll cost maybe $500 for them to register you with the relevant state’s Secretary of State office. You don’t have to register in your home state, either. If you live in California or New York, you don’t want to â€" those states’ laws don’t protect you enough from creditors. Register in Delaware or Nevada or, failing that, your home state. Once you incorporate it starts forcing you to think like a businessman. Income will now be tabulated on IRS 1099 forms, rather than those infamous W-2s. The former is where you want most of your income to come from. As a practical matter, once you incorporate you’ll pay (correction: your company will pay) you a salary. What’s a reasonable amount to cover your annual living expenses; maybe $24,000? Then that’s what Employee #1, you, will receive and pay taxes on. After deductions, your effective tax rate on the salary will be close to zero. But what about the rest of your company’s income? Legally speaking, the rest of the revenue your S Corporation takes in is not salary, but shareholder dividends. Which are taxed at a lower rate than salaries are. And you can now deduct all sorts of business expenses before calculating the net shareholder dividends you’ll pay taxes on. Go to IRS.gov and check out Form 2106. Your employer fills one of these out every time you go on a business trip, or eat a meal on company time, or buy anything related to your job. And your employer then enjoys the tax deduction. *** * It tears me inside to know that by writing this post, I’m giving you leeches an economic edge. 5 Effective Work Habits For Fresh Graduates - Work It Daily

5 Effective Work Habits For Fresh Graduates - Work It Daily Being new in the working world, I am sure you are eager to show off your new-found skills and knowledge. Instilling some basic work habits can noticeably increase your productivity. Being consistently effective with your work increases your chances of early success in your career. The five effective work habits are: 1. Volunteer For Assignments One of the best ways to signal that you are a keen learner and are not afraid of hard work is to volunteer for assignments. Especially assignments no one seems interested to do. However, before that you should assess your own skills and knowledge to see if you can confidently accomplish it. If you are confident in completing the task in full and perfection, go ahead and volunteer for it. However, do remember one thing. Under-promise and over-deliver on the assignment you volunteered. Do not be too confident that you turn a perfect opportunity into mess. Once you start the project, see it until the end. You would be seen as someone who is courageous enough to take on additional assignments. You would also be seen as someone who follows through in your work. This is the first habit you need to internalize. 2. Be Nice To People I am sure we have all heard this often enough. Be nice to people regardless of their rank and designation. It sounds philosophical but when you are nice to people they go out of their way to help you. And being new in an organization you would never know what sort of help you would need. Colleagues often like to work with nice talented people. When you have this effective work habit you increase the chances of people wanting you to work on their team. Being nice to people is just common courtesy. There is nothing extraordinary about this particular habit that you need special skills. A smile and a “Good Morning” are a good start. In this day and age, people working in pressurized environments often use stress as an excuse when they blow up. Is this necessary? Nice is often reciprocated by nice. In fact, it can lower your stress level. 3. Prioritize Your Work We all love to start work on things that are close to our hearts. However, often these may not be the most urgent and important in our list of tasks in the workplace. When you select things you are more interested in rather than work that is more important or urgent, you lower your chances of success. Have a list of things to do according to its strategic importance to your company. Know your role in completing the tasks at hand in order to achieve that corporate goal. When you prioritize your work, you are more productive and that increases your chances of career success. 4. Stay Positive As someone new in the working world it is very easy to feel down because you are new. You are not used to the work system. You have new people to deal with and people in the working world who behave very differently from school. It takes a lot of getting used to. There will be office politics to deal with regardless of how little. Be above all these and stay positive in the face of challenges. When you are positive you remain focused on your goals. You make better decisions and therefore become more productive. 5. Highlight A Problem But Bring Solutions The last effective work habit of the five effective work habits is to bring solutions each time you highlight a problem to your boss or management. You need to remember when you bring problems and not solutions, it is often construed as complaining. To avoid that label, offer solutions. A range of possible solutions also indicates to your boss you have thought this through before approaching him/her with a problem. Have in mind a recommended solution amongst those you suggested. These are the five effective work habits I constantly drill into new employees who are fresh graduates in our company. At first glance, these may seem like common sense. However, in actual working environment people tend to sometimes forget these very basic effective work habits. And don't practice them often enough. Internalize these and consistently practice them to increase your chances of success. Photo Credit: Shutterstock Have you joined our career growth club?Join Us Today!

Be Unapologetically Ambitious Career Advice from Sadie Kurzban

Be Unapologetically Ambitious Career Advice from Sadie Kurzban Sadie Kurzban, founder of the wildly popular dance-based ((305)) Fitness classes, has some firmcareer insight Work your ass off. And she doesnt just mean physically (though zu sich classes are notoriously challenging). Indeed, zu sich story shows that hard work pays off. Kurzban welches just 22 years old when she founded her business and made her first hires, and now, at 27, she doesnt seem to be slowing down anytime soon. ((305)) Fitness has grown to include 30 instructors and 25 DJs across New York City, Washington, D.C., and Boston -- and betweenmanaging her employeesand negotiating real estate deals, Kurzban still finds time to teach and work out. If I cant find time to teach, I know Im doing something wrong, she says. How did she turn her passion for dance and teaching into a booming career? She started by doing her homework. She studied Econ as an undergraduate at Brown University, where she won an entrepreneurship c ompetition that gave her the financial means to move to New York City and found ((305)) Fitness. And shes continued learning along the way, navigating the many challenges that come with owning a business, including fundraising and managing a kollektiv.Fairygodboss recently checked in with Kurzban, who shared with us how being a young woman has complicated her work (and how its helped). She offered her insight on how to succeed as a working woman (Develop thick skin...People will not think to ask you for your opinion, so make it clear that your opinion is valuable by proving yourself through hard work) and revealed some of the women she finds fruchtwein inspiring.FGB Can you tell me a bit about your career path? How did you get to where you are now? SKI started ((305)) Fitness while still a senior in college. I was teaching these crazy dance cardio classes out of the gym at Brown, where I went to school. I loved teaching it gave me so much life and I felt I was helping students conn ect with their bodies, blow off steam, and let loose in a group setting. Whats so empowering about this class is the way that it sheds self-consciousness. Its impossible to take yourself so seriously when you are shaking your booty in front of a stranger. When I was a senior in college, I realized this was really what I wanted to do with my life. So I studied up on entrepreneurship, changing my major from Political Science to Econ. I took entrepreneurship courses, classes on accounting and marketing. I read up as much as I could and I asked as many questions from people who had taken the plunge before me. I won Browns prestigious Entrepreneurship competition and the funds ($25,000) were enough to give me the kick-in-the-pants to move to New York and start ((305)).FGB What have some of the challenges/advantages of managing your own business been?SKThe challenges are always changing, which is part of the excitement One day, I might be trying to negotiate a new real estate deal, the nex t day I might be trying to help an instructor-in-training who is struggling with mastering his or her first class. The advantages are plentiful and never-ending. I get to manage my own schedule. I can zustrom errands when I need to. I get to work with people who I adore. I get to spread happiness and empowerment it is the very mission of our brand. And finally, I get to leave a legacy on this world of which I am extremely proud.FGB Is there anything that you struggled with early in your career that you feel like youve overcome/improved upon?SKOne of the challenges Ive faced has been managing a team. I was only 22 when I hired my first team of instructors. I had never worked anywhere. I knew nothing about professional communication. Sometimes I blurred lines too much and couldnt compartmentalize friendship and professional life (meaning Id take things too personally, or I would hold things in rather than expressing myself in a direct way). Now we have over 30 instructors and 25 DJs ac ross three cities, plus a team of six full-time staff, and Id like to think Im doing a much better job of managing a team and keeping everyone motivated.Ive learned that people want to feel heard and valued, and even if we dont always see eye-to-eye, the fruchtwein important thing is setting clear boundaries and being honest with others. Ive found that being transparent and honest as a manager has worked in my favor. Dangling a fake carrot only works for so long. Eventually, people see through the BS. My approach has been to manage a team with full honesty, celebrate accomplishments and break bad berichterstattung rather than dust things under the rug. I find people really respect you when you are real with them.FGB Do you ever feel (or have you ever felt) that being a young woman has made it more difficult for you to effectively run your business?SKAre you joking? YES. Anyone who tells you no or says I think being a woman has actually worked to my advantage is either lying or is in denial of the fundamental inequities and obstacles we face as women. There are about a million and one examples, but to name a few raising money. The fundraising process is essentially made for men. Usually, I am pitching in a room full of older (white) men. I have a mentor who once told me one of the smartest things I did was get a partner who was an older, white-haired man. I had the idea and the execution, and Id let him do the talking in the meetings. Without him, it was question after question. With him, it was simple handshakes over beers.Another way managing a team. As a woman, I am expected to strike a very careful balance of being nurturing and direct. If I am too direct, then I am considered cold, calculating, a bitch. If I am too kind, then I am a pushover and nothing gets done. Ive had to sit employees down and explain I am the boss. There is a power structure, like in any organization, and I sit on the top, and sometimes Im going to make decisions you dont agree with. While Ill never know (because there is no male clone of me in time), I dont believe a man has to have these same awkward conversations with people he manages. On the other hand, here is how being a woman has helped my product is mostly consumed by women. 90% of our clients are women. Central to our brand identity is female empowerment. Having the experience of being a millennial woman has helped me walk the walk in a way that really shines through our product.FGB What advice do you have for young women who are starting out in their careers - or for those who are taking on new management positions?SKWork your ass off. You will be scrutinized. Develop thick skin. Youll have to work ten times as hard. Develop an outstanding work ethic that cannot be questioned. You have to advocate for yourself. People will not think to ask you for your opinion, so make it clear that your opinion is valuable by proving yourself through hard work. At the end of the day, money talks and power talks, so if you want to make a difference and help other women rise the ranks, be relentless in your career pursuit, be unapologetically ambitious. Stay committed to your growth. Take in feedback. Welcome constructive criticism. If men think youre going to cry if they give you too much work or if they give you feedback, then theyll learn to avoid you. Have an attitude of bring it on and people will respect you for it.FGB I imagine youre very busy managing various aspects of your business - is it hard for you to find the time to teach/work out yourself?SKNo. Teaching and working out come first for me. If I cant find time to teach, I know Im doing something wrong. The areas of my life where Ive had to sacrifice are mostly personal I dont go out often, I dont drink alcohol (because hangovers kill productivity) and I know I have to put marriage and family planning on hold for many years to come.FGB Is there a woman (or women) -- whether or not youve met -- who most inspire(s) you?SKMy goodness, th e list goes on and onAmanda Freeman CEO of SLT. Shes built a tremendous fitness business and bootstrapped the whole thing. Shes also single parenting in New York City. I give her all the props in the world. This woman is honest, direct, authentic. A true star.Patricia Moreno in the fitness world, she is my idol. Her message is deep. One of the first to say enough with beach body and all this consumerist crap. Lets actually empower people to be their best selves through exercise.Emma Watson I went to school with her and she was always extremely humble and kind. She has used her public platform to spread an empowering message. She is intelligent, poised, and a real fighter.Serena Williams if more young women looked up to Serena, wed live in a better world. Truly, the greatest of all time. Unapologetically herself. Extremely ambitious and driven. A role model of owning your body and your sexiness.Fairygodboss is committed to improving the workplace and lives of women.Join us by reviewi ng your employer
