How Jagex Games Studio Saved £1 Million in Recruitment Fees

How Jagex Games Studio Saved £1 Million in Recruitment Fees Jagex stands as the UK’s largest independent games studio employing over 550 skilled professionals. This achievement requires a state of the art recruitment strategy and a recruitment team ‘hard-wired’ in to the global talent pool. We believe that our world-class online representation through social media channels, a comprehensive global events calendar, our refined and personable careers site and our highly trained industry specific recruitment team have made us one of the pioneers of truly successfully direct talent sourcing. During 2012 Jagex Games Studio recruitment team faced a number of difficult challenges: Recruit the world’s best games development talent for the next technological advance of a Guinness World Record breaking MMORPG “RuneScape” with over 215 million subscribers (Java, C++, low poly 3D Artists, UX Designers, RPG specific games designers) Quickly grow an internal development team behind a Hasbro IP backed online shooter, “Transformers Universe” with its own completely separate technical skill requirements. (C#, C++, Lua Scripters, Hard Surface 3D Artists, Project Managers, Web Systems Developers) The creation of a third party publishing team to allow Jagex to move in to the games publishing domain and establish itself as the premium games portal of choice in the UK (External Producers, Publishing Directors, Product Managers, Senior Designers) Complete all of the above with absolute minimum agency expenditure as quickly as possible whilst ensuring no sacrifice in quality. Recruitment agencies cost you time as well as money There’s no doubt that a well-considered and specialised PSL can be a great asset to your recruitment strategy. It’s even true that having a number of quality agencies at your disposal can improve your direct sourcing and help improve your brand; however, a quality service such as a recruitment agency you can trust can come at a great cost. During our 2012 recruitment campaign, time became our most valuable commodity interfacing regularly with over 40 internal hiring managers each with specialist demands, Boolean searching a host of CV databases, engaging with candidates via social media, building talent pool projects in LinkedIn Recruiter, all within the time constraint of a normal working day, and then the phone rings……whether it’s an agency on your PSL or not they are specifically trained to keep you on the phone as long as possible, to qualify every inch of the job specification you have posted on your website and to establish their best chance at making a fee. Agencies work with a portfolio of clients to ensure consistent revenue. What implication does this have on the service they offer you? Firstly, their clients will tend to fill a certain sector or specialise in a certain technical area, Java for example. So it should come as no surprise that the candidate they find for your Java role will also be interviewing with a number of other clients in their portfolio. Say you work with them at 15% and another client operates with them at 20%, where do you think the agent will focus on placing the candidate? Remember that you’re working with a KPI driven service where you’re only as good as your last deal. Can you afford to waste time reaching this point in the process only to lose the perfect candidate due to a hard sell on the other company’s behalf? You are the best promoter of your brand You should live and breathe the company you recruit for and be able to communicate its core values and future aims with genuine passion and enthusiasm. We have the benefit of recruiting for one of the most exciting companies in the UK right now. Pioneering the F2P Games market, delivering a product with over 215 million registered users and developing tech created by some of the greatest minds in the country. Compare this pitch to that of an agent who may read something along the lines of “yeah, they have a pension and free fruit I think”. It’s clear who you want to sell your brand the people inside. I can count on one hand the list of agencies I trust with selling our company values and vision and even then, how can we ultimately be sure that this information does not become diluted? If you plan to rely on agencies you will find yourself constantly keeping them informed and repeating the same information over and over again, but how much of the important stuff actually reaches the candidate? You should become a subject matter expert on your company and thus, its most effective salesperson. Invest in the best tools â€" track results and respond to changes There have been a number of recent online articles stating that the challenge of finding candidates has been removed due to the use of social media and people’s expanding digital footprints. This couldn’t be truer in the games industry; we’ve been leading the way users communicate, share content and connect with each other on the internet for years. That being said, games developers can be a somewhat unsociable lot, often hiding away in the far reaches of the internet in very specialist, ultra-technical discussion forums. Staying up to date with the most advanced search tools on the market will certainly help you here. At Jagex we invest in LinkedIn Recruiter, a state of the art ATS, a number of social media aggregators and an extensive and global events calendar. Although these people are easier to find than they would have been 10 years ago, you’re still going to have to turn over a lot of stones in a number of strange places to find that star candidate. Also remember that anyone can invest in these tools; it’s becoming world class experts in their usage that will allow you to source the very best and stay ahead of your competition. We’re a firm believer in always being able to improve what we do and so we have set up solid metrics and feedback forms allowing us to view and evaluate our performance almost daily. This helps us see where we are and what we can improve on. We are also able to make a call on whether we should continue doing certain things including which agencies have performed the best for us and what job boards we see the best return on investment from. The candidate experience should be flawless Everyone is a potential new employee to the organisation, whether now or 3 years from now and we understand this. The candidate experience for us starts off even before a candidate has applied for a job here, via social media channels and our own careers site. We integrate social media into our daily activities by keeping our followers engaged and updated via a host of social media channels such as: our personal LinkedIn accounts, the LinkedIn careers page, Facebook and Twitter. Each social media channel’s message is tailored to the audience and covers a mixture of everything from game updates, interviews with staff, social activities and the food in the staff canteen, to key tips on how to get into the games industry and pictures in and around the studio. By doing this, we are humanising the brand and making people feel part of the “Jagex family”, allowing outsiders to gain an insight into the inner workings of the studio. Once they arrive at the studio for an interview, all candidates are given an in-depth studio tour by a member of the recruitment team who fully understands the core values and mission and by this time, has a personal relationship with the candidate. This allows the candidate to get a feel for the environment they will be working in and the people they will be working with. Successful candidates currently residing outside of a reasonable commuting distance are offered support both financially and non-financially. This could include a relocation allowance, tailored guides on where to start looking when moving to Cambridge as well as a “local secrets” guide to where the best places are to eat, drink or activities that are a must locally and much more. Everyone is a recruiter â€" incentivise the brand ambassadors Jagex is a firm believer in “Everyone is a recruiter!” Candidates who receive a positive experience with Jagex will go on to tell people of their experience. Thus prompting the brand and encouraging people to want to explore opportunities with the organisation further. This is one of the reasons why the candidate experience is really important to us. We incentivise employees within the business by encouraging them to recommend people they feel would make a great addition to the “Jagex family”, offering “recommendation bonuses” to all successful hires. To summarise, by humanising the whole recruitment process and being the biggest ambassador for your brand as well as investing in the right tools with a large social media and event presence, you too could reduce your cost per hire to record breaking levels. How to Write a Professional Bio for Social Media

How to Write a Professional Bio for Social Media Time and time again, we are reminded that “short and concise” is the best. When it comes to writing about yourself, you have no idea where to start and where to end. Add that to the fact that it has to be professional, personal, catchy, concrete, error-free, uniqueokay, I’ll stop now. Relax! It is possible! A bio isn’t something you want to lose sleep over. However, considering that nearly 40% of hiring managers are using social media to research job candidates, your social media bio is something you would want to look over and make sure it fits your “brand image”. (Tip: make sure it also matches your resume) Heres how you can do it: 1. Prove “who you are” with action verbs: Words are just wordsâ€"unless there is concrete evidence to back it up. So, if you’re saying “I’m a social media guru”, you need to have hard evidence to back-up your claims. They say actions speak louder than words. But since words are your only option to make a first impression here, your best chance is by using “action verbs”. If you are a social media guru, tell them what you DID. What were you accomplishments? How were you involved? Notice how the answers to these questions require concrete action verbs. 2. Avoid the clichés: Something hits the internet first, everyone loves it, it spreads, and eventually everyone’s using it. That’s called a “buzz” and you don’t want to use what has been over-used. By the time it is exhausted, it has become a cliché. I see so many social media bios everyday that are so similar. The only difference is probably the name of the organization. “I am a social media guru” “I am a travel junkie” “I am a mother of X many kids” “I own 2 dogs” “I am a [something] addict” “they call me a [something computer-ish] geek”.  According to the NY Times, these are “self-aggrandizing” words that are hazardous. I think they are plain boring simply because they are overused. 3. Make sure it’s searchable: If you want people to find you, first you have to know who these people are. Are they hiring managers? What type of hiring managers (Please don’t say any)? Be specific when deciding what type of audience you’re seeking to woo. Focus on keywords relevant to that particular area of interest. Now, make sure those keywords are sufficient in your bio to assure that you are searchable. 4. Don’t trail off: In an effort to be cutesy, I see many individuals trail off with their bio content and actually waste their given amount of characters. If you are “a brilliant mother of two kids” or “an owner of three golden retrievers”or “a crazed fan of the [name] band”, that’s great! But if an employer is your target, he certainly won’t be interested in that piece of information. Chances are, he probably owns more dogs and has more kids than you. And he probably doesn’t have the same taste in music. This also applies to the background, display picture, and other content. Make sure everything on your social media profile manifests that image you want to give out to your target audience. If you are a business person, make it professional and look like an entrepreneur’s page. If you are a marketer or a designer, let the background and display photo paint that picture for you.  5.  Make each character count: When it comes to Twitter, you’ve got your 140 characters. Make it count. Too much detail is not-so-affordable. Make sure every single word is relevant and credible.Try to focus on expertise and don’t go beyond that. Make it fit! 6. Make it match across all channels: A potential employer might search you and go over your LinkedIn profile, which you may have already tailored as per the likings of perspective employers. But what about Twitter, Facebook, Google+, Pinterest, etc? The employer might find an entirely different picture of you on Facebook or Twitter, especially if you haven’t been changing the privacy settings. A  study published in the Journal of Social Psychology claims that employers can judge a candidate’s future work performance just by spending five-ten minutes lurking around their Facebook profile. Now, you must be aghast by this methodology and wondering why employers use it in the first place. Like the Forbes contributor, Kashmir Hill says: “Like it or not, Facebook and other sites like it are becoming the digital proxies for our real world selves. Our profiles on social media reflect our likes, dislikes, personalities, and best photo angles, and are likely more useful to employers in seeing what we might be like to work with than a short interview.” 7. Use unique words: Here’s a tip on how to be catchy. You may have seen, heard, or observed a plethora of catchy bios that include a bit of humor. That is also number one strategy to get the attention of your target audience (or any audience for that matter). Another clever strategy is to include creative and unique words. You can try to be smart with the language you use. Ditch the over-used clichés (enthusiast, geek, hero, guru) and go for unique words or phrases unheard of. Real life examples: “Raving lunatic prone to crazy outbursts and grossly offensive messages. All views are my own”- @colinkelly “Best-selling author of sixty beloved high fantasy space punk novellas”- @spacepunkcowboy Experiment with your words and come with unique combinations. You’ll realize that there are a million different ways to say one simple thing! Don’t make it simple.   Author: Ashley Sanford leads the team of content developers at PeakDissertation.co.uk. Radical Self-Love - Yeah, Right

Radical Self-Love - Yeah, Right I know Im not alone.   There are, sadly, a lot of women who have major challenges with loving or even liking themselves.   So whats this thing called radical self-love?   And just how am I supposed to achieve radical self-love when sometimes I cant even look at myself in the mirror? Judging   Myself? I consider myself a fairly caring and empathetic person.   I try to see the world from behind the eyes of those I interact with.   So if you asked me if I was judgmental, Id give you a quick no in reply. Or am I? While Im neither a church goer nor what youd call religious (I do consider myself spiritual in a new-agey kind of way), I do remember some of the teachings I heard when I was very young.   Even at the tender age of 4 or 5, these resonated with me and I adopted them as my guideposts: Do unto others . . . Forgive easily, often, and repeatedly Go the extra mile Walk a mile in the other persons shoes And then there were those teachings that felt right, but I couldnt quite comprehend them or at least how to live them.   Like love yourself as your neighbor, for example.   Love my neighbor.   Got it.   Love myself as my neighbor?   You can insert a puzzled look or blank stare emoticon here. Maybe Someday . . . Most women have a very ingrained if not genetically implanted habit of caring for others first. Ourselves?   Well, well get around to that.   Someday.   But the message is clear:   we dont matter, at least not as much. The mirage of someday is a hopeless surrender to never     In todays world that also makes it very easy to fall into the trap of questioning (judging?) ourselves, asking am I really doing enough?   And from there, am I enough?    So we plod along through life, striving for at least a degree of self-acceptance or self-esteem that is enough to keep us going. About That Judgment Thing   . . . If you didnt just have a little aha moment, let me help you.   If what Ive said resonates even a little, its time to recognize that youve been judging yourself. But thats not so bad, you say, because at least Im not judging others.   Or are you? Judgment, in one way or another, is measuring.   So youre measuring yourself.   Measuring is a way of putting a value on something more or less than, good or bad, or worse than or better than.    So measuring yourself means youre placing yourself somewhere on the continuous line that includes everyone.   And in judging ourselves, were effectively judging everyone. That was my aha moment.    When I finally made sense of that youthful teaching love yourself as your neighbor.   Meaning, I cannot truly love others until I really love myself.   Until I first let go of all of my self-judgments. And.   Accept.   Me.   Right where I am. Now That You Know . . . Letting go of all my self-judgments is a huge order.   But Im going to work on it, and stop saying someday. If youd like a ton more insights about this topic, Id recommend the book The Body Is Not An Apology by Sonya Renee Taylor.   Thats what started me thinking about all of this.   I should have known something was cooking inside me when I even shied away from the book at first, because I didnt like the cover. But trust me, its an awesome read that will get you to examine some pretty important stuff about yourself. And maybe, with a little radical self-love, start doing life differently.

Another way you can show your professionalism is by using proper grammar and spellings of every part of your resume. The resume that you choose should not be selected randomly. It is not as simple as going into your local bookstore and picking up one of several stacks of resumes. Mondelez International is hiring a chocolate tester for Cadbury - Debut

Mondelez International is hiring a chocolate tester for Cadbury - Debut Whoa guys, whoa. We might have just found the best job in the history of all the jobs ever. Confectionery conglomerate (say that three times fast) Mondelez International are officially hiring a part-time  chocolate tester for Cadbury. ?????? The Mondelez International Chocolate Tester Job   If youre into chocolate (who isnt?) the job will involve tasting products from your favourite chocolate and cocoa beverage companies. Were talking Cadbury, Milka, Prince Oreo and more.  ?? A screenshot of the job advert placed on LinkedIn. The wonderfully earnest job advertisement asks candidates whether they aspire for the chance, each and every day, to put a smile on peoples faces. But if youre thinking that this job will just be a piece of (chocolate) cake, youd be wrong. Breaking down the key responsibilities Firstly, youll need to be able to provide honest and objective feedback about the chocolate product youre tasting. This means not only must you have a discerning taste palette for chocolate, but youll need to be able to describe the difference in taste in a detailed manner. Secondly, the job calls for strong team-working skills. Seems that youll be working on a panel of taste testers, and will have to collaborate to reach an agreement on taste. Thirdly, you have to be organised. The job calls for consistency in the results given, after all. The requirements for a chocolate tester job This is a refreshingly equal opportunities position, it seems. Theres no degree involved, and seems to be a job that is more about whether you fit the company culture. The most requirements seem to be a passion for confectionery, honesty and a firm grasp of the English language. Doesnt seem out of our ball park at all! Having said that, having such a vague list of requirements means that tailoring your application might be a bit more of a challenge. If youre keen on applying, best do it quickly! Theyll close the job advert as soon as they feel theyve had enough applications. If youre interested in a job thatll give you a pension, generous holiday allowance, benefits AND CHOCOLATE, you can apply right here. Get Your Foot in the Door with These Surefire Job Search Strategies - CareerAlley We may receive compensation when you click on links to products from our partners. There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle Albert Einstein Are you sending out dozens of resumes a day but not getting any responses? The job search is a frustrating process no matter what, but if youre not even getting to the interview stage, it can seem devastating. You know that if you just had the opportunity to talk to someone, you could convince them that youre the right candidate for the job! Take these tips to heart, and youll be given that opportunity in no time. Hit the pavement. Literally get your foot in the door. Show up and hand in your resume. You can ask if its possible to talk to someone in HR about possible openings. The key to success with this one is to be nice to the receptionist, as he or she is often the gatekeeper. Get a professional resume edit. And have them look at your cover letter, too, while theyre at it! Just one typo can make an employer put your resume in the no pile, particularly at a time when they have so many qualified candidates to consider. Its also possible that youre not highlighting your experience in the best possible way, or using an old format. A professional resume writer can help guide you to creating the resume that represents you best. more Resume Help Ask for an informational meeting. Its not an interview, but it is an opportunity to get face time with the people that matter. Take the opportunity to learn more about the company and your field, but dont be afraid to mention details about yourself and what you are looking for. If you make the right impression then, theyre likely to call you back if and when a relevant position opens up. Mail your resume. If youre answering an online ad, Ive got bad news for you: youre among 300 to 400 others (on average) who did the same thing. Luck plays a big part in whether or not you are actually called in, since they are unlikely to look through all of them. Instead, theyll likely sift through just enough to find several qualified candidates to bring in for interviews and then stop looking. So how do you increase the odds that your resume gets read? Well, first, email it in! You cant avoid being a part of that lottery altogether, but you can increase your chances of getting read by also mailing or even faxing it in as well. Having the physical piece of paper in front of them may make it more likely that youre called. Create a digital resume. Another way to get your resume to stand out from the pile is to make it different! Of course, you also want to include the traditional format, but if you can provide a link to an eye-catching digital resume, it might help you to get their attention. What is a digital resume? Anything you want it to be. You can use a blog, website, or even social media to showcase your talents, and provide links to everything from graphs, videos, and more to make your case. Make use of the email subject. Are you just writing Resume or your name as the email subject? Youre missing out on an opportunity. Instead, include a brief list of your qualifications, like this: Skilled Nurse with 8 Years of Experience in a Hospital Setting. More Resume Review Downplay your experience. This may seem counterintuitive, but it can be the solution if (and only if) you are overqualified for the positions you are seeking. Maybe youre looking for a better work-life balance or arent having any luck seeking more advanced jobs. Either way, potential employers wont know that, so find ways to make it look like youre a better fit. If the problem is that you have too many years of experience, it is now customary to only include the last ten years that can go a long way. Job titles look too fancy? Tone them down. It can also sometimes help to leave off advanced degrees if you fear that you may look over-educated. Make sure youre qualified. The other side of this, of course, is that you may be applying for jobs that youre under qualified for. You can fix this problem by aiming at jobs more suitable to your experience level or you can get more experience. But how do you get more experience if no one is hiring? Taking classes, getting a degree, doing volunteer work, or taking on freelance or consulting jobs can make a big difference. 5 Ways to Thrive as a Renaissance Soul in your Career - When I Grow Up

5 Ways to Thrive as a Renaissance Soul in your Career - When I Grow Up I learned about the term Renaissance Soul thanks to a book I picked up years ago, when I was writing my research paper for my coaching school on how coaching creative types differs from coaching non-creative types. The sub-title of the book was Life Design for People with Too Many Passions to Pick Just One (its now How To Make Your Passions Your Life). If that resonates with you, then youre a Renaissance Soul, although  you can find a bigger checklist here. Now, if this IS you, which it probably is (its me AND about, oh, 100% of my clients), you might just make really negative connotations with this personality trait of yours. You can equate it to your flakiness, or ADD-ness, or that you often dont finish what you start. But really, being multi-passionate is positive! Were lifelong learners, we thrive on variety, were creative, we can juggle lots of virtual balls in the air, were natural entrepreneurs, and we always have something to share and teach to others. Now that we know being a Renaissance Soul aint a curse, how can we  build it in to create and achieve our grown-up, passionate careers? Here are 5 ideas: 1. Stop searching for the Or in your career, and instead embrace the And.  My career is a sneaky multi-passionate one, because as a creative career coach I do so much more than coach my clients: I write, I speak, I edit videos, I conduct interviews, I teach, Im a community leader, a copywriter, etc. I actually broke down the hats that I wear and found 15 titles I can claim. And the best part? I can decide tomorrow to write a book, or teach a course, or to delegate my project management responsibilities. 2. Experiment with what time management structure works best for  you. Ive had multi-passionate clients that only wanna work on one thing at a time, but need to know theyll be done with their project in 3 months so they could move on to the next thing. Ive also had clients that need 3 balls in the air at all times so they dont get too antsy. And ya know what? Both are right for that respective person!  While there are resources like this, this and this that are tailored to us creative Renaissance Souls to help us with our productivity, a general catch-all that works for  everyone  just doesnt exist. So start by consistently trying  something and then tweak it along the way! 3. Let it be known that you love being  a learner, and build variety into your work.  Instead of trying to hide your natural curiosity, allow yourself to become the person raising their hand to take a new training course or research a new project. If you work for someone else, let your boss or manager know that you  thrive when you can  work on a wider  scope of projects, learn something new, or have more variety in your day-to-day activities. If you work for yourself, you can use what you learned about yourself time-management-wise to block your time accordingly. For example, I compartmentalize my week by working with clients Mondays and Tuesdays, writing on Wednesdays, working on my projects (my upcoming CreativeLive class, my podcast, etc.) on Thursdays and doing admin and catch-up work on Fridays. It usually doesnt work as cleanly as that, but it helps me keep focused day-to-day while allowing me to flex my multi-passionate muscles. You, though, might do best with making a stand ing date on Friday afternoons to work through a new book or online course. Or maybe you want to spend the mornings painting and the afternoons filling orders and doing more admin-y, marketing-based work? The key here is to figure out how you work best, and then schedule it in advance so you can set yourself up to best follow through. 4. Lead  a passion project at work.  Think about what makes you feel meaningful. Is it supporting gay rights? Working with dogs? Arts education in our schools? Zero in on a cause, passion, or interest of yours and see what and how you can connect it with the work you do. René  at Beach Beauty Bar is a great example of this. She started a half-marathon training team  for free, with twice-weekly runs and tons of support. It makes so much sense because she describes her work as being about human connection and invoking positive, healing energy within each of her clients.  Renés a former client of mine, and I know that the training team is a great way to make her current (and potential future!) clients feels beautiful inside and out! If you dont work for yourself, it might be tough to put together, say, gay rights and the advertising agency you work for. But what if you ask to lead a team to do pro bono work for the Gay Mens Health Crisis? Or if you ask to have your agency sponsor a te am for the annual AIDS Walk? Youll never know  until you open your mouth and ask! 5. Get your hands on 25 digital products to rock your career (worth $1712!) for just $97 as part of the 3rd Annual Multi-Passionate Must-Haves sale.  Im so proud to be the co-creator of this bundle, and this one is extra special to me because its specifically career-focused.
